How to connect hydraulic hoses to an auger drive or a hydraulic breaker

Both of our manuals start the same way: machine off and pressure released before a hose is touched. This guide covers an auger drive and a hydraulic breaker, step by step, with the figures our manuals print.

Updated 2026-10-18

Short answer

Engine off, hydraulic circuit locked out, pressure released. Keep couplings and caps clean. Keep the oil supply inside the flow (l/min) and pressure (bar) printed for your attachment. On larger drives, run the case drain hose straight to the tank with no filter and no quick-release coupling.

Before you touch a hose

  1. Stop the engine and lock out the hydraulic circuit.
  2. Breaker: close the stop valves "IN" and "OUT", operate the control lever to release the pressure trapped in the hoses, then wait ten minutes.
  3. Clean the hose ends, caps and plugs before you open them, so dust and mud stay out of the breaker and the machine (breaker manual, section 4-3).

Auger drive

A drive needs a flow and a return of oil from the auxiliary hydraulics of your machine. The gearbox is reversible, but reversing needs a two-way auxiliary circuit; check with your machine dealer. Drilling rotation must be clockwise. The manual is e-mailed from the "Download manual" button on the product page. Page numbers refer to it.

  1. Connect the drive hoses to the auxiliary quick-release couplers. They are normally near the end of the loader arms, the excavator dipper or the crane boom.
  2. Some drives come with hoses but without the quick-release couplers. Buy couplers locally that match the ones on your machine.
  3. Lubricate the mounting pins.
  4. Check the supply. The manual calls it critical that the oil stays inside the flow and pressure limits of your drive; they are on the data plate and in the specification on the product page.
  5. Larger drives have a case drain: a flexible hose that sticks out of the hood. Connect it to a line that returns to the hydraulic tank of the machine. No restriction, no filter and no quick-release coupling in that line. The fittings are not supplied.
  6. Check that the auger turns clockwise when drilling. Then follow the running-in in auger drive first run.

Hydraulic breaker

From the breaker manual, section 4-3:

  1. Take the union caps off the breaker pipe at the arm end and connect the hoses after removing the hose plug. Do not let oil drip on the ground. Keep the caps and plugs in the tool box.
  2. Connect the hoses to the stop valves on both sides of the arm.
  3. Start the engine, lift the boom, work the bucket cylinder and check that the breaker hoses are connected correctly.
  4. Warm up: idle for 5 minutes, then move the boom and arm for about 5 minutes.
  5. Turn the stop valves to "ON". The tool can come out under the oil pressure in the line, so do not stand near the breaker.

Breaker manual, section 4-3. The numbers are the manual's model numbers; check the plate on your breaker. Flow and pressure ranges per model are in the specification table of the manual.

The breaker pressure setting must be lower than the machine's setting to protect the pump. The manual says about 5 to 10 kg/cm² lower where the machine's main pressure is below its table (section 5-8). If the machine has no pressure control valve for the circuit, one has to be installed (section 4-2). If your piping differs from the basic circuit in the manual (figure 4-1), ask us or the attachment maker before you run it.

Grapples, tree shears and other hydraulic attachments

We publish manuals for auger drives and breakers only. For a grapple, a shear or any other hydraulic attachment, use the flow, pressure and connection data on the product page of the article and your machine's own manual. Contact us with the article number and your machine model if anything is unclear.

Frequently asked

The auger does not turn. What do I check first?
The manual lists, in order: no oil flow (are the quick-release couplers engaged, is the machine hydraulic system working and the oil level right), a pressure relief valve that is faulty or set too low, a seized drive (contact a service workshop) and an auger jammed in the ground (lift it out before you start).
Can I put a filter or a quick-release coupling in the case drain line?
No. The case drain must return to the tank with no restriction, no filter and no quick-release coupling.
Do the hoses come with the drive?
Some models are supplied with hoses but without the quick-release couplers. The couplers have to match the ones on your machine.
How long do I wait after stopping the engine before I disconnect a breaker?
Close the stop valves, operate the control lever to release the pressure in the hoses and wait ten minutes (breaker manual, section 1).
