Best hydraulic breakers 2026: our comparison and pick

There is no single best hydraulic breaker, only the best breaker for your machine. We sell six sizes in two ranges, AWA as the value choice and GORE as the premium, with the same impact weight and impact energy per size. Here is our pick per machine class, a straight comparison of warranty, and guidance on when AWA is enough and when GORE pays off. To see the full range with every spec, head to the category page.

Short answer: for a mini excavator of 1.2 to 3 tonnes pick the S30/180, for the common contractor machines of 5 to 8 tonnes the S45 is our all-round pick, and for daily rock work on heavier machines take the S50 or S60. If you want the most impact weight per krona, the AWA S40/240 is the value mid-range choice. We earn on both ranges, so our only driver is matching the breaker to the machine, not selling you a size too large.

How we picked

We rank on the three things that decide whether a breaker works on your machine: operating weight, hitch and oil flow. The breaker should weigh 7 to 14 percent of the machine, sit on the same S hitch and fall inside the machine oil-flow window. On top of that we weigh in real Nordic jobs: reinforced concrete in demolition, hard bedrock in excavation and frozen ground in winter. Because AWA and GORE share the same hardware per size, the range choice is about price and warranty, not performance. All prices below are starting prices excluding VAT, and the current price is always on the product page.

Our pick for the mini excavator: S30/180

For a mini excavator of 1.2 to 3 tonnes the S30/180 at 139 kg is the right size. It handles tight demolition, slabs, lighter concrete and breaking frozen ground where a larger machine cannot reach. The blow rate is high, 700 to 1200 blows per minute, which suits breaking surface rather than heavy bedrock. AWA lands at the value end, GORE a step above. If the breaker runs a few days a month AWA is enough; if it runs every week, take GORE for the warranty. See the S30/180 in AWA or GORE.

Best value in the mid range: AWA S40/240

If you want the most impact weight per krona, the AWA S40/240 is the value pick. You get 325 kg of impact weight on the common S40 hitch, nearly double the impact weight of a standard S40 without changing hitch. It suits machines of 3 to 7 tonnes and takes heavier demolition and reinforced concrete than the smallest sizes. The hardware is identical to the GORE S40/240; the difference is a 2-year warranty against 3 years and a lower price. It is the choice for anyone who breaks regularly but not daily. See the AWA S40/240.

Our all-round pick: S45 for 5 to 8 tonnes

The most common contractor machine sits at 5 to 8 tonnes, and there the S45 at 413 kg is our all-round pick. It has the impact energy for daily mixed demolition and lighter rock work, and it sits on the S45 hitch that is standard in that class. The price gap between AWA and GORE is wider here than on the smaller sizes, so think about how hard you run it: break daily and you earn GORE back on warranty and resale value; break now and then and AWA is enough. See the S45 in AWA or GORE.

Our pick for daily rock work: GORE S50

If you run hard bedrock and granite day in and day out on a machine of 6 to 12 tonnes, the GORE S50 at 629 kg is our pick. Here we choose premium on purpose: when the breaker runs every day, one day of downtime costs more than the price gap to AWA, and a 3-year warranty with no registration requirement is worth the money. The impact energy frees the rock in blocks without blasting for every metre. The AWA equivalent is there if budget rules. See the GORE S50.

Best for heavy demolition: S60 for 12 to 19 tonnes

For heavy machines of 12 to 19 tonnes and large-scale demolition or coarse rock, the S60 at 948 kg is the largest size we build. It has the lowest blow rate but the highest impact energy, which is exactly what coarse bedrock and large concrete structures need. At this level the breaker almost always runs daily, so GORE and a 3-year warranty are usually right, but AWA is there for project buys with a fixed budget. See the S60 in AWA or GORE.

AWA or GORE: which range should you choose?

Choose the range by how often the breaker runs, not by performance. The dimensions, impact weight and impact energy are identical per size. AWA is the value choice with a 2-year warranty after registration, for anyone who breaks now and then and wants to keep the investment down. GORE is the premium choice with a 3-year warranty, for anyone who breaks daily and where downtime costs more than the price gap. Rule of thumb: a few days a month, take AWA; every week all year, take GORE.

How to match the breaker to the machine

The base rule is that the breaker weighs 7 to 14 percent of the machine operating weight, sits on the same S hitch and falls inside the machine oil flow. A 3-tonne machine takes around 140 to 170 kg, an 8-tonne around 400 kg and a 15-tonne around 950 kg. If you are unsure of the hitch or flow, give us the make and model and we match it. The full spec table with oil flow, working pressure and blow rate per size is in our hydraulic breaker buying guide, and you can search your machine in the finder.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Which is the best hydraulic breaker for an excavator?
The best breaker is the one that matches your machine weight, hitch and oil flow, not the largest in the catalogue. For a mini excavator of 1.2 to 3 tonnes the S30/180 is our pick, for the common 5 to 8 tonne machines the S45 is our all-round pick, and for daily rock work on heavier machines take the S50 or S60. The most impact weight per krona comes from the AWA S40/240. Then choose the range by how often the breaker runs: AWA for now and then, GORE for daily.
What is the difference between AWA and GORE hydraulic breakers?
The difference is price and warranty, not performance. The same size has the same impact weight, oil flow, working pressure and blow rate whichever range it is. AWA is the value choice with a 2-year warranty after registration, GORE the premium choice with a 3-year warranty. AWA suits anyone who breaks now and then, GORE anyone who breaks daily and where downtime costs more than the price gap.
Is a more expensive hydraulic breaker always better?
No. A larger or more expensive breaker is only better if your machine can carry it. Go too large and you load the boom and hitch past their limit and shorten machine life; go too small and the blow stalls in hard rock. The price gap between AWA and GORE in the same size is about warranty and resale value, not impact power. Match the size to the machine first, then choose the range by how hard you run it.
Which hydraulic breaker suits an 8-tonne excavator?
An 8-tonne machine takes an S45 at 413 kg, which is our all-round pick in the mid range. If the machine is closer to 6 tonnes the S40/240 at 325 kg also works, and closer to 12 tonnes you can step up to the S50 at 629 kg. Check the oil flow on the machine breaker circuit against the breaker window before you order, so it strikes correctly.
What does a good hydraulic breaker cost?
With us a hydraulic breaker runs between roughly the entry and heavy tiers depending on size and range, all shown excluding VAT. A breaker for a mini excavator sits at the lower end, a mid-size machine in the middle and a heavy machine at the top. AWA is lowest, GORE a little higher for the same size. The current price is on each product page and you can spread payment with Klarna.
Do I need GORE, or is AWA enough?
If you expect the breaker to run a few days a month, AWA with its 2-year warranty is plenty. If it runs every week all year, you earn GORE back on the warranty and the higher resale value, and a 3-year warranty with no registration requirement means less risk in daily use. The hardware is the same, so you lose no impact power with AWA, only one year of warranty.
